Summer is Here! Best Sunscreen for you and the Oceans!

June 2, 2018

I am always looking for ways to protect our environment. Being a travel specialist for the South Pacific Islands, I particularly want to help reduce the chemicals and plastics being introduced into our world’s oceans.

Did you know that it is estimated that 14,000 tons of sunscreen is deposited into our world’s oceans? The New York Times recently ran an article about Sunscreens and its contribution to the damage to corals in our oceans. READ the ARTICLE

Remember, that while I am speaking of our oceans, enjoying our rivers, lakes, and streams, sunscreens can also affect these bodies of water. In addition, water from lakes, rivers and streams enter the ocean or soak into our land and aquifers.

As I did research I also reviewed an interesting article from Allure magazine three years ago on sunscreens and how they may be affecting our hormones. Ok, so we have a challenge…how do we protect ourselves from the sun and keep chemicals out of our water and oceans?

Answer! Use biodegradable and non-oxybenzone sunscreen. Zinc-oxide is what you are looking for. This is the white cream, now in lot’s of colors, that you see on surfers and other people who find the water is their natural environment! There are a number of companies that combine zinc-oxide with natural ingredients that not only protect but also nourish your skin.

What if you are allergic to sunscreen? The best thing is to speak to your doctor to look at clothing that reduces the amount of sunscreen needed and other ways of helping yourself and the environment, because none of us want to burn or create a situation for skin cancers.

Happy summer and water activities!
